With every single product, project, and plan, Hunter is focused on finding ways to make homes comfortable and beautiful. So, when we were introduced to The Dorothy Day House organization, our employees felt a particular connection. We knew we had to do something to help support their mission.
We partnered up with Memphis-based charity The Dorothy Day House and completed our largest and most heart-warming Huntervention to-date.
The Mission
Inspired by the vision and passion of social activist, Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement, The Dorothy Day House provides temporary housing and support services for homeless families in Memphis, Tenn. The same city where Hunter Fan Company is headquartered.
The Dorothy Day House collaborates with local volunteers, staff, and other organizations, to provide families in need with a safe environment and the means to re-establish their independence. While homeless shelters are commonly women-only or men-only resulting in families being split apart, The Dorothy Day House keeps families together – mothers, fathers, and their children.
The House
Dorothy Day’s third and newest home is called Joseph’s House, named after St. Joseph. Normally, the organization relies on donations of gently used items from volunteers or partner charities to help furnish and prepare the home. This time, Hunter employees recognized an opportunity to give back to an organization in our own backyard and got to work crafting a Huntervention.
The Huntervention
Weeks of planning not only brought together a beautiful, functional design for Joseph’s House, but also an event where our employees could take time away from the office to give back to our local community. Hunter’s brand and design teams collaborated to choose the ceiling fans, light fixtures, and furniture that best fit each room’s needs and design. Nearly 40 Hunter employees volunteered to make it happen, assembling furniture and installing fans for this Huntervention.
Hunter employees also wanted to provide a personal touch. Bill and Doug, from our engineering team, showed off their woodworking talents by designing and building a handmade a dining room table and two benches. Under the ambient light of our Astwood chandelier families and volunteers will be able to enjoy a meal together. One of our graphic designers, Olivia, hand lettered and painted artwork with inspiring quotes, selected by the Dorothy Day House staff, in each of the bedrooms and in the living room. Everywhere you look thoughtful care was taken in selecting every detail to help make this house a home.
