How to Install an Extension Downrod

When installing ceiling fans for high ceilings, a downrod is typically utilized to ensure the ceiling fan is at the ideal height for comfort, airflow, and safety. If the ceiling height is greater than 10ft, an extension downrod is suggested. Follow the step-by-step guide below to install your downrod extension.

Ceiling Fan Height From Ceiling

If a ceiling fan is mounted too high, it will be inefficient at circulating the air below. Installing a ceiling fan downrod extension will improve air circulation while maintaining proper safety clearance. For safety, fans should be no more than 7ft from the floor

How to: Ceiling Fan Extended Downrod

Step 1: Remove the Included Downrod

Disassemble the factory-installed downrod from the ceiling fan.

Step 2: Prepare the Extension Downrod

Attach the included downrod to the downrod extension.

Step 3: Remove the Set Screw

Remove the set screw from the fan assembly and set it aside—you'll reinstall it later.

Tip: Use a long zip tie, fish tape or wire coat hanger.

Step 4: Thread the Wiring

Feed the fan wires through the extension downrod.

Tip: Wrap tape around the wire ends to create a smooth leading edge, making them easier to pull through the downrod.

Step 5: Tighten the Downrod

Thread the extension downrod into the motor coupling by hand until it stops.

Step 6: Secure the Set Screw

Reinstall and fully tighten the set screw to lock the downrod in place.

Step 7: Install the Canopy

Slide the canopy onto the extension downrod before continuing with your ceiling fan installation.

Your extended downrod is now installed and ready for the remainder of the ceiling fan installation process.
