Why does my ceiling fan wobble?
Wobbling can stem from a variety of causes, including blades warping, loose screws, and faulty installation. While Hunter fans are built to be wobble-free, incorrect installation can cause an issue with imbalance or wobbling. Whether you have a Hunter fan or one from another brand, you can use our troubleshooting tips to help fix a wobbling ceiling fan.
Steps to fix a wobbly ceiling fan
First, grab a few tools and supplies that you may need to assess and fix your wobbly fan:
- Ladder or step stool
- Screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Duster
Now you're ready to get started.

Turn the fan off and use a tape measure to make sure there’s at least a 30-inch clearance from the tip of the fan blades to the nearest object for safety. You may need to use a ladder or step stool to reach your fan.

Remove the canopy cover to examine the mounting bracket and make sure the fan is mounted properly. If the bracket is loose, use a screwdriver to tighten it.

Dust can build up unevenly on the fan blades over time and can infiltrate the fan motor, which could throw off the balance of your ceiling fan. Give a thorough dusting to all fan parts and then test the fan on the high speed setting. If your fan continues to wobble after cleaning, move on to the next step.

Make sure your fan is properly installed and all fasteners are secure. Running the fan counterclockwise on HIGH for 10-20 seconds when testing for wobbling in these next steps.

With your fan stopped, attach a plastic clip to the end of any blade. Run your fan and observe the wobble. Stop the fan and move the clip to the next blade. Repeat this process on all of the fan blades to locate the blade responsible for the wobbling.

Once the problem fan blade is identified, slide the clip up or down the edge of the blade to fine tune the balance. Run your fan and observe the wobble. You may need to do this multiple times, adjusting the clip in small increments along the edge of the blade until the least wobbling is achieved.*
*Make sure the clip and weights are securely attached to avoid injury.

At the location where you noticed the least wobble, adhere the balance weight in line with plastic clip, and remove the clip. Sometimes, you may need to add multiple balancing weights to get the best results.
Run the fan on high speed to see if the wobble has been corrected and confirm balance.
