Do I need a downrod for my ceiling fan?

If your ceiling height is 8 feet or less, you will need a low-profile, or flush-mount ceiling fan that has no downrod. If your ceiling is angled or has a height of 9 feet or more, you’ll need a ceiling fan downrod. A downrod allows your ceiling fan to hang at the ideal height to effectively direct the airflow throughout the space, while at the same time providing safe overhead clearance.

How long of a downrod do I need for my ceiling fan?

The downrod length you need will depend on the height of your ceiling. Starting with a 9-foot ceiling, you’ll need a 12-inch downrod, and the required downrod length will increase as the ceiling height increases. So, if you have a high ceiling of 15 feet, you’ll need a 72-inch downrod.
