THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF CEILING FAN DOWNRODS

A ceiling fan downrod connects the ceiling fan body to the mounting hardware on your ceiling to ensure secure, efficient, and wobble-free performance. Ideal for rooms with a ceiling height over 9 feet, downrods lower your fan, bringing it closer to you and your guests for optimal and efficient comfort. In unique spaces, like those with vaulted ceilings, fan downrods ensure that your fixture can be securely mounted with enough clearance to keep the blades from hitting drywall or wood beams.

FAN DOWNROD LENGTHS

At Hunter, we offer downrods in a variety of lengths ranging from 2 to 72 inches so you can select the best fit for each space. A short ceiling fan downrod works well for spaces with ceilings that are too high for a flush mount fan but not tall enough for a long ceiling fan downrod. You'll need longer extension rods for ceiling fans installed on ultra-high ceilings. Either way, Hunter and Casablanca downrods are easy to install and simple to pair with your Hunter ceiling fan model. See the table in the FAQs below for help finding the right downrod length for your ceiling height.

DOWNRODS TO MATCH OUR CEILING FAN COLLECTIONS

While a downrod can make it easy to install a ceiling fan at the right height in rooms where ceiling angles and height are a concern, it can also tie in with your room design. We offer ceiling fan downrods in a range of finishes so you can find the perfect color to enhance your room's appearance and complement your favorite fan styles. Chrome, Brushed Nickel, Iron, and unique specialty finishes, like Antiqued Bronze, can make your ceiling fan a defining part of your home. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a downrod for my ceiling fan?

If your ceiling height is 8 feet or less, you will need a low-profile, or flush-mount ceiling fan that has no downrod. If your ceiling is angled or has a height of 9 feet or more, you’ll need a ceiling fan downrod. A downrod allows your ceiling fan to hang at the ideal height to effectively direct the airflow throughout the space, while at the same time providing safe overhead clearance.

How long of a downrod do I need for my ceiling fan?

The downrod length you need will depend on the height of your ceiling. Starting with a 9-foot ceiling, you’ll need a 12-inch downrod, and the required downrod length will increase as the ceiling height increases. So, if you have a high ceiling of 15 feet, you’ll need a 72-inch downrod. Learn more about downrod length in our Measuring a Ceiling Fan guide.

Are ceiling fan downrods universal?

Hunter downrods are not completely universal. Downrods with ‘Original’ in their name are compatible with our Hunter Original® fans. The other downrods are compatible with the rest of our Hunter and Casablanca fans, excluding Hunter Original models.

Can all ceiling fans use a downrod?

No, not all fans are intended for use with a downrod.

Are ceiling fan downrods adjustable?

Hunter ceiling fan downrods are not adjustable. We carry downrods in specific lengths so you can find the right fit for your fan and ceiling – no adjustment needed!

Are ceiling fan downrods interchangeable?

Not all ceiling fan downrods are interchangeable. You’ll need to look at the product details for fan model compatibility.
