It’s not a shopping holiday – Memorial Day sales and Black Friday anyone? – but we’re using Earth Day to save you money (and save the environment, of course).
TURN UP THE THERMOSTAT
By simply using a ceiling fan, you can raise the thermostat on your air conditioning by six to eight degrees and you won’t notice a difference in comfort.
Ceiling fans help circulate air and create a draft in the room. This means your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard and you save up to 47% on cooling costs. (This depends on local climate conditions and energy rates. Still-- not bad, right?)
During moderate weather – that perfect temperature of not too hot, not too cold – using your ceiling fans may allow you to not turn on the air conditioner all together.
Bonus tip: Want to save 15% on your heating costs in the winter? Reverse the direction of the fan so it goes clockwise (there’s a small switch on the fan’s body). It creates an upward draft and sends warm air throughout the room.
LEAVING? DON’T LEAVE THE FAN ON.
Fans cool people, not rooms. You’ll hear our experts at Hunter say this a lot. Ceiling fans create a wind chill effect. What’s that? Glad you asked. A ceiling fan makes you feel cooler by speeding up the evaporation of perspiration on your skin. For example, if the thermostat in your room is set to 80 degrees, running the fan could make you feel as if it’s 72 degrees.
THE PERFECT FIT
If your fan is too small, it won’t move enough air. Too big, and it could move too much air (brrr). Here’s a table to help you decide what size fan you need:

If you want to stay cool but don’t want your papers blowing everywhere, you might try a larger blade. A larger blade gives you comparable cooling at a lower speed than a smaller blade.
MAKE YOUR LIGHTS GREEN
Green as in energy efficient of course. Switch out those traditional incandescent bulbs in your ceiling fan for LED bulbs. Here at Hunter, we want our fans to be as energy efficient as possible.
